Society of St Vincent de Paul (SVP)
The Society of St Vincent de Paul is an international Catholic organisation of lay people. It was founded in Paris, in 1833, by Frederic Ozanam and his companions. Placed under the patronage of St Vincent de Paul, it is inspired by his thinking and his works. In the spirit of justice and charity, we seek to help those who are suffering. We do this by the person-to-person involvement of our members.
Examples of our work currently include; home visits to the elderly or sick people, hospital visits, giving people lifts to Church, helping people with shopping and supporting the work of St Paul’s, Worcester, a centre for the homeless.
Each member becomes as involved as they feel able or as their time and resources permit and in those activities to which they feel suited. Active members tend to commit themselves to about one hour’s work every week, but some choose to do more.
Meetings of the Conference are an essential part of the SVP. Through the Conference our Vincentian spirituality is deepened, work is allocated, activities are organised and support is offered.
The St Joseph’s Conference meets at Chris Park’s house, on Mondays throughout the year at 8pm for about 40 minutes.
Many Conferences are twinned with Conferences abroad and seek to support them, especially financially. Our Conference is twinned with two Conferences in India and one in Sudan.
