About This Week's Mass

SOLEMNITY OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE LORD – YEAR C

19th -20th APRIL 2025 – Parish Mass Book Page number 252

Pope’s Prayer Intention for April

For the use of new technologies. Let us pray that the use of new technologies will not replace human relationships, will respect the dignity of the person, and will help us face the crises of our times.

Please Pray

  • For the Sick and Housebound of St Joseph’s Parish: Clare Gray, Anne Wiseman, Anne-Marie Elder and Elizabeth Docker. We include all those in hospitals, nursing homes & their own homes. Our Lady, health of the sick, pray for them. Amen.

  • For Those on the Anniversary of their Deaths: Dorothy Brooks and Barbara Lucas.

WHY SHOULD WE PARTICIPATE IN THE HOLY WEEK LITURGY?

On Palm Sunday we entered Holy Week, and welcomed Jesus into our lives, asking him to allow us a share in his suffering, death and resurrection. This is also the time we remember and relive the events which brought about our redemption and salvation. That is why the Holy Week liturgy presents us with the actual events of the dying and rising of Jesus. The liturgy also enables us to experience in our lives, here and now, what Jesus went through then. In other words, we commemorate and relive during this week our own dying and rising in Jesus, which result in our healing, reconciliation, and redemption. No wonder Greek Orthodox Christians greet each other with the words, “Kali Anastasi” (Good Resurrection), not on Easter Sunday but on Good Friday. They anticipate the resurrection. Just as Jesus did, we, too, must lay down our lives freely by actively participating in the Holy Week liturgies. Proper participation in the Holy Week liturgy will deepen our relationship with God, increase our faith and strengthen our lives as disciples of Jesus. But let us remember that Holy Week can become “holy” for us only if we actively and consciously take part in the liturgies of this week. This is also the week when we should lighten the burden of Christ’s passion as daily experienced by the hungry, the poor, the sick, the homeless, the lonely and the outcast through our corporal and spiritual works of mercy.

RINGING OF BELLS ON HOLY THURSDAY AND EASTER VIGIL

If you have a bell, please bring it to the Holy Thursday Mass and Easter Vigil. During this solemn Mass and the "Gloria" is sung to the triumphant sound of ringing bells. Then, after the "Gloria" is sung, all the bells in Rome and throughout all of the Catholic world are silenced out of respect for Our Lord's Passion. They will not be heard again until the feast of Easter is announced with the "Gloria" at the Easter Vigil. In the past, this strict silence was imposed on church bells, school bells, and even dinner bells. In other countries the people would say, "The bells have flown to Rome." According to folk belief, the bells from all the church steeples around the world fly to Rome after the Holy Thursday. They wait there until Easter morning when they journey back to their homes to spread the joyous proclamation of Our Lord's Resurrection to all of Christendom.
