The Bible Society began in 1804 because the desire of a poor young Welsh girl, Mary Jones, to possess her own bible, had so impressed a group of dignitaries that they decided to supply free bibles to people too poor to buy them.
Now the scope of the work of the Society extends in many directions and the Malvern Action Group for the Bible Society, through local activities, mainly fund raises for the work of translation for the millions of people around the world who lack a bible in their own language.
To date, half of the world's languages have been translated, leaving 3406 still to be done. Malvern Action Group has 17 members from local churches.
